Discover Nepal Through Authentic Cultural Journeys

Led by Passion, Rooted in Purpose, Crafted for You

A Journey From Corporate America to the Soul of Nepal

Meet Laura, the Heart Behind Culturekova

Welcome!

I’m Laura, and I’m passionate about exploring cultures different from my own. What began as a single, serendipitous journey to Nepal changed everything for me. Immersed in its rich traditions, I was captivated by the colorful village life, hearing monks in their early morning and evening chants, and being welcomed into strangers’ homes for warm milk tea and conversations that often felt like charades. Those initial days planted a seed – not just to return but to eventually guide others through this remarkable country.

Fast forward, and I’ve had five incredible trips, each deepening my connection to this culture. My last two visits, each a month long, were dedicated to creating Culturekova – carefully curating experiences that allow others to discover Nepal through its beautiful people and landscapes.

Based in Southern California, I’m the mother of three adult children and deeply committed to community service and helping others. My board service spans two organizations: chairing a non-profit feeding the hungry and working with another that builds houses in Mexico.

Just as I’ve found deep fulfillment in giving back to communities close to home, I want to share how meaningful it is to connect with and contribute to the beautiful communities of Nepal. I know from experience that as you explore this extraordinary country, it’s the moments of connection and giving back that will leave an indelible mark on your soul.

I would be honored to have you join me.

Warmly,
Laura

Frequently Asked Question

This is not your typical vacation – This is an extraordinary journey through Nepal that offers a perfect blend of adventure, cultural immersion, and unforgettable, sometimes unimaginable experiences. It’s ideal for curious travelers who seek authentic connections, are open to new experiences, and are ready to embrace the unexpected.

Moreover, this trip is perfect for those looking for a custom-tailored experience that has been carefully curated and is intimate, with a very small group of travelers. This setting fosters the opportunity to forge lasting relationships and share unique moments together.

Whether you’re marveling at monks in their serene routines, exploring ancient temples steeped in history, sharing tea and conversation with welcoming villagers, or spotting the elusive sloth bear in Chitwan National Park, this trip promises to broaden your perspectives and create memories that will stay with you forever.

At Culturekova, we believe that the magic of travel lies in the connections we make and the depth of the experiences we share. By limiting to just 6-8 participants, we ensure an intimate setting where our guests can fully engage with the local culture and form meaningful bonds with fellow explorers. This small group size allows for personalized attention, genuine interactions with local communities, and a more flexible and immersive experience.

The journey spans 13 nights once you land in Kathmandu, offering a comprehensive exploration of Nepal’s diverse landscapes and cultures.

Every day brings new opportunities to engage with Nepali culture. You’ll visit ancient temples, participate in local festivals, share meals in villagers’ homes, and even spend time with monks and maybe a shaman. This trip is designed to immerse you fully in Nepali life, leaving Western ideals at home.

Our journey features thoughtfully selected accommodations that progress from authentic to luxurious, each chosen to enhance your Nepalese experience.

We start our journey with very modest, authentic lodgings in Kathmandu that are safe and meticulously vetted, ensuring a peaceful and enjoyable beginning to unwinding and embracing your stay. These accommodations are nestled next to the magnificent Shechen Monastery, surrounded by beautiful gardens where monks of all ages in their vibrant orange-dyed robes can be seen milling about in their daily routine. For our adult travelers, each guest will have their own private room unless shared accommodations are preferred (though sharing does not reduce the trip cost). College prep students will share a room with another student as part of the cultural immersion experience.

In Chitwan National Park, you’ll stay in a luxury boutique hotel designed in traditional Tharu-style architecture. The property features beautiful gardens bursting with vibrant flowers and exotic plants, creating an atmosphere of serenity with hidden gems like cascading waterfalls and intimate seating areas. The swimming pool offers a bird’s-eye view of Chitwan National Park and the Rapti River, where you might spot crocodiles basking in the sun, rhinos grazing along the riverbank, elephants cooling off in the water, and peacocks displaying their magnificent plumage.

The journey culminates with two nights at the five-star Chandragiri Hills Resort, Nepal’s finest hotel, which seamlessly blends cultural authenticity with modern comforts. Perched atop Chandragiri Hills overlooking Nepal’s capital city, this lavish mountain retreat offers a tranquil escape in the Himalayan foothills. On clear days, you can enjoy breathtaking, postcard-perfect views from the infinity pool and jacuzzi, with a stunning 180-degree panorama of the Himalayas and Mt. Everest. The resort provides adventurous activities, diverse cuisine, and sophisticated comfort while maintaining deep cultural significance.

English is widely spoken in Nepal’s business circles, and we’ll have interpreters with us throughout the journey. Many Nepalis enjoy practicing their English with visitors, making the cultural exchange even more enriching. Plus, the welcoming smiles and polite bows with a heartfelt “Namaste” speak volumes in this culture.

Nepal is known for its warm, welcoming people. It’s common for strangers to invite you into their homes for tea or fresh milk and conversation. While normal travel precautions apply, many visitors are surprised by the genuine kindness they encounter.

Pack simple, versatile clothing suitable for temples, jungle safaris, and everything in between. Layers work well, and walking shoes are a must—please leave the Jimmy Choos at home. Don’t forget a swimsuit for later accommodations and a converter for charging electronics. Consider bringing small gifts like stickers, composition notebooks, gel pens, children’s picture books, easy readers, or Matchbox cars to share with locals you meet. We’ll also provide a detailed packing list and forecasted temperatures upon booking.

Be sure to review your airline’s rules on size restrictions. We’ve found that not checking luggage can be especially freeing—you won’t have to worry about lost or delayed bags. Additionally, it’s a good idea to bring a smaller, lightweight backpack for daily use.

The physical demands of our itinerary are moderate, with activities suitable for most fitness levels.* However, it’s important to note that some locations on the tour are at high altitudes:

– Kathmandu Valley: 1,400 meters (4,600 feet)
– Chitwan National Park: 100 meters (330 feet)
– Chandragiri Hills: 2,551 meters (8,370 feet)
– Sindhupalchowk: 1,800 meters (5,900 feet)

Due to these elevations, some travelers may experience altitude sickness. If you’re prone to altitude-related issues or have any concerns, we recommend:

1. Consulting your doctor before the trip
2. Bringing altitude sickness medication as a precaution
3. Allowing time to acclimate when reaching higher altitudes
4. Staying hydrated throughout the journey

*If needed, we can accommodate various needs, including hiring a local sherpa for those with mobility concerns. Your health and comfort are our priority, so please don’t hesitate to discuss any concerns with our team before booking.

While we recommend consulting your healthcare provider to ensure you’re up-to-date on recommended vaccinations for Nepal, it’s worth noting that access to antibiotics and remedies for common travel ailments is readily available in Nepal. However, it’s always best to be prepared.

We ensure there’s time built into each day for personal relaxation, allowing you to step back, relax, and enjoy your own peaceful surroundings.

If you prefer to make your own arrangements, please plan to arrive at Tribhuvan International Airport (KTM) before 5 pm on the start date of your trip and schedule your departure for after 1 pm on the final day of your journey. Alternatively, we’re happy to book your travel arrangements, and we’ll cover the details during your private Discovery Session.

Upon stepping through the arrival hall, you’ll receive a warm Nepali welcome. We provide private transport from the airport and throughout the journey, ensuring your safety and comfort at every step. For those seeking a true local experience, there will be moments later in your journey to try tuk-tuks or micro-buses. These local transports are an adventure in themselves – you might even find yourself sharing a ride with a goat or chicken!

During the trip, dining is a rich cultural experience:

Special Needs: If you have specific medical dietary requirements, please inform us during registration. We’ll do our best to accommodate these needs while embracing the flexibility and respect needed to immerse ourselves in a different culture.

Variety: In addition to meals at local restaurants, we’ll have the unique opportunity to visit villagers’ homes. Here, you can observe meal preparation and even participate if interested, learning traditional cooking methods firsthand.

Cultural Immersion: Dining in villagers’ homes offers a genuine glimpse into Nepali culture, showcasing local hospitality and traditional culinary practices.

Inclusions: All meals are included, with many places offering vegetarian options to accommodate different dietary preferences.

Each guest will receive a personalized quote tailored to their unique travel arrangements, including options for first-class or business-class travel if desired. We offer flexible payment plans and can accommodate various payment methods. We’ll discuss all of this in detail during your private Discovery Session.

From the moment you join our group in Nepal, we’ve thought of everything – accommodations, transportation, group meals and activities, entry fees, gratuities, and wellness treatments are all included in your journey. While flights and travel insurance are arranged separately, you’ll only need to think about choosing the perfect souvenirs to take home! Rest assured that your Culturekova experience meaningfully contributes to the communities and people we meet along the way.

We recommend having some cash on hand for souvenirs. You can conveniently order Nepali Rupees (NPR) through AAA or, in some cases, directly from your bank.

The Shechen Guest House offers the option to exchange modest amounts of U.S. cash for Nepali rupees, provided it is in pristine condition and newly issued. There are also a few trusted ATMs available that charge a modest transaction fee. We recommend bringing a known bank ATM card and a credit card, although most day-to-day purchases in Nepal are made with local Nepali rupees.

Cancellation Policy: Our cancellation policy reflects the intimate, carefully curated nature of our journeys:

A 25% non-refundable deposit reserves your space, with the remaining balance due 180 days before departure. All payments become non-refundable upon receipt. This policy supports our commitment to small-group excellence and our advance arrangements with Nepalese partners. Our intimate experiences require significant preparation, including commitments to local communities, authentic accommodations, and specialized service providers.

We strongly recommend comprehensive travel insurance to protect your investment against unexpected circumstances. This coverage provides invaluable peace of mind throughout your journey preparation.

This policy enables us to maintain our commitment to intimate group sizes and exceptional quality while managing our waitlist to ensure enthusiastic travelers can join our transformative experiences when spaces become available. Should extraordinary circumstances require Culturekova to reschedule, you’ll have the option to join the new dates, transfer your payment to a future journey, or receive a full refund.

We want you to know that we’re here for you every step of the way. This journey is an incredible opportunity to explore a fascinating culture, make new friends with like-minded world explorers, and create memories that will last a lifetime. We encourage you to leave your worries behind as soon as the plane door closes and open yourself to the amazing adventures that await you.
